Art and Mental Health Series Part 2 with Keet (@makeshiftlove)

November 22, 2020

Many times in our Filipinx/a/o community art is something to stray from, romanticize, or only hold value if it's lucrative. On Bruha Baddies, we want to identify folks that use it as part of an overall healing for themselves that eventually encourages others to participate in art making too.

Keet Geniza is our first international guest on Bruha Baddies and hails all the way from Toronto, Canada. They are an illustrator and they open up about artist block and social media's impact on art sharing. Tune in for their tips how doodling can save your day! We're fans of Keet's ability to artistically highlight fat experiences among pinays/pinxys, fat women of color, and queer women of color.

Content Warning (CW): Sexual Assault

Many times in our Filipinx/a/o community art is something to stray from, romanticize, or only hold value if it's lucrative. On Bruha Baddies, we want to identify folks that use it as part of an overall healing for themselves that eventually encourages others to participate in art making too.

Kayleen is a polymath with art, counseling, and academics. In her avenue of zine making, she re-authors her survivor story and reaffirm her truths helping online and in person communities. Her zines have been conversation openers, and also a source of controversy among family, friends, and fans.

Follow Kayleen's work @surbiborkay and may you find the courage to journal, create dialogue, and own your story too.

BB Recommendations:

Jean:

  1. Jackfruit = LANGKA
  2. Mute Notifications in your settings
  3. Muting friends on a temporary basis

Kayleen:

  1. Growing my own garden
  2. Playing guitar and singing along to cheesy Filipino ballads

Nicole:

  1. I AM OBSESSED WITH KYLIE MINOGUE’S NEW ALBUM AND IDC.

White Partners (Part 1 of Many): Centering our Filipina/x/o Identities in our Interracial Relationships

October 11, 2020

Half the Bruha Baddies team, Jean Munson and Daniel Nero converse about their interracial relationships with white folks. Placing self love grounded in their culture first helps navigate how to build healthy relationships with partners from a different ethnicity.

Experiencing cultural stigmas, racism, and difficult conversations, the co-hosts manage to find and manifest joy in straight and queer relationships.

Secret Mom Episode: Being a Nurse, Patient, Parent, & Daughter during Covid

Secret Mom Episode: Being a Nurse, Patient, Parent, & Daughter during Covid

September 27, 2020

On this episode, meet the woman who fondly calls Jean Munson (podcast co-founder) Bruha. Recorded during the last week of care taking her mom, Jean and Virgie (Mom) sit down to have a candid conversation about living together as adults and the role reversal of caring for each other.

If you liked or related to this episode, write us a review or letter! This was a very vulnerable recording since the generational cultural barriers of sharing created a bit of hesitation from Jean's mom to trust that her stories/experience/love matter.

Listener Tribute Series Part 3 with Camille Ungco

August 30, 2020

We moved the proverbial Bruha Baddies plane from Vegas, to the Bay area, and now to the Pacific Northwest in Seattle to talk to one of our long time listeners Camille Ungco. She grew up in New Jersey and is now on the pursuit of a Doctoral degree.

Tune in to how we mutually cheer, learn, and listen to each other no matter the distance.

After breaking 10,000 downloads, we wanted to reflect on the folks that got us to where we are by holding space for us every time an episode airs.

In part 2 of the Listener Tribute Series we connect with long time supporter and friends, Ria Yap and Diana Calica. They are carving and creating spaces in their own lives with the work they do, hobbies they enjoy, and their friendship with each other. We are honored for the things they teach us as podcasters, because their input, views, and voices matter.

Channel into that inner walang hiya (even introverted) you may tuck away sometimes and find yourselves connecting to these listeners who have a chance at the mic.

No Education Vacation: Activism & Safety in Schools

July 19, 2020

Half the Bruha/x team showed up to talk candidly and reflectively about Education and being Educators. Rosalina Trinindad and Daniel Nero talk about experiences in their teaching careers and the full scope roles they assume in the lives of students during the pandemic and social revolution actively happening in 2020.

Tune into their external and internal conflict on managing safety, education, and self harm that we think fellow POC/Filipinx/a/o educators can resonate with.
