The Netflix Original is based on the Filipino komik series written by Budjette Tan and illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo. What is Netflix’s Trese about? “In Manila, where dark supernatural forces pervade the criminal underworld, it’s up to Alexandra Trese to keep the peace — but there’s a storm brewing.” So, why Trese? Alexandra Trese is literally a Bruha Baddie: witchy, badass, flawed, and in need of a good therapist. There will be spoilers, so pause now if you want to watch Trese before proceeding.

Special Guest Kat Aben converses with Jean and Daniel about her journey as a as an Archaeologist (a field our filipino/a/x community rarely pursuit). Kat is a Doctoral Candidate with a specialty in historical archaeology and Filipino-American heritage. She is currently employed as a federal archaeologist.

One of the many indicators in our diasporic community as Filipinx is language barriers. Philippines has many dialects, first/second/third gen and beyond are sometimes raised without the dialect of their family, parents make intentional choices about being an english only assimilated home, and the list of barriers upon barriers are complex, layered, and nuanced. 

Today we sit with the co-hosts (Daniel Nero, Nicole Espinosa, and Jean Munson) on their experiences with language barriers, navigating in and around that, or experiencing the marginalization that occurs when one language is superior over the other.
